A bibliography is a list of references normally included at the end of a report, thesis or dissertation. The list of references may include documents, articles and books which have been used while compiling the report. An annotated bibliography is one in which each reference is accompanied by a short description and evaluation. It is the short description and evaluation that is referred to as “annotation”. The annotation highlights quality, accuracy and relevance of the references. The length of the annotation should be about 150 words. In contrast to abstracts which only present descriptive summaries, annotations are both critical and descriptive. They analyze the author's opinion, authority, appropriateness of expression and clarity. APA refers to American Psychological Association. They have designed a format for presenting an annotated bibliography. Making an APA annotated bibliography example begins with compiling the list of documents, periodicals and books about the topic of your interest. Read through the books and make reviews. Then pick on the ones which present a variety of views on your topic. You can now write an article of about 150 words on the scope and central theme of the article or book. Include one or more sentences to highlight how this reference relates to your topic, compare this reference with another one cited in the same bibliography, is appropriate to the intended audience and highlight the author's background or authority.
The following APA annotated bibliography example for a journal citation.
Kombo J. O., Omondi, G. O., & Kooyman, W. (2004). Vegetarian diets and their effects on fertility. Nairobi Family Review, 49 (7), 132-189. Researchers at the University of Nairobi have confirmed their hypothesis that a diet rich in vegetables increases fertility. They carried out a survey covering 3,000 families among the Masai and 2,500 among the Kikuyu. The Kikuyu and Masai are two tribes in Kenya. The Masai are pastoralists whose main occupation is animal production. Their diet is predominantly meat, milk and blood. The survey found out that the average child per family is 2. The Kikuyu inhabit the slopes of Mount Kenya. Their main occupation is crop production. Their diet is predominantly vegetables and grains. The survey found out that the average child per family is 2. The researchers corroborated their findings with the fact that in the animal kingdom the herbivores, such as the wildebeest, are found in very large numbers compared to the meat eaters, such as the lions. This study contrasts an earlier by Atieno (see list of references below) on productivity of elephants and which concluded that their small numbers was a result of their diet consisting of herbs. |
